Why is Changing Your Eating and Drinking Habits So Challenging?

Over the years you become so accustomed to certain food and drink, that a suggested change in your diet isn't a change ... it's a challenge!

Hope you’re in the mood for some delightful foodie humor. Here goes.

When you have developed certain eating and drinking habits over the years, you think that either you will absolutely never change your ways OR you reluctantly make the change while whining about how hard it is to change. But once you make that change … which is usually for the better … your body (and mind) adapt so easily that you wonder why you thought it would be difficult.

Has that happened to you? It has happened in my life so many times.

I talked about my first food experience with veggie burgers in another post.

Several years before that experience, I told a friend that I would never eat meatless spaghetti. I used my kids as an excuse and said they would never agree with that change in the menu. Truth is I had never even tried to get them to eat it. I just assumed they wouldn't. Several years later, my daughters took over some of my meal preparation duties and decided that they were perfectly OK with meatless spaghetti. Served it with garlic bread and a huge salad and they were happy! Well! There went my excuse. LOL. The meal is great! To my surprise, I don't mind meatless spaghetti at all! And of course, my objection to a plate of meatless spaghetti was totally ridiculous. After all, I'll eat a large plate of vegetable lo mein without batting an eye. And what is lo mein? DUH!

My latest dietary change pertains to drinking less coffee and consuming more tea. I think back again to that same friend, who was my office mate. She drank tea religiously while I consumed gallons of coffee. Once again, my daughters decided that they would become tea drinkers instead of coffee lovers. Hey, wait a minute! Is this a conspiracy? LOL.

I am not a total convert. I still have to have my daily dose of java. But I am enjoying experimenting with the various flavors of teas that my kids purchase from the local grocery store and also making my own teas with herbs and spices in the kitchen cabinet. Teas have numerous medicinal purposes and lots of health benefits. On top of that, tea tastes good and some teapots are really pretty!

Have you been challenged to make any dietary changes?

Finally Bought My Christmas Gift: A Rice Cooker

This is my story. My alternate title for this post is: “Why I Finally Bought My Dream Rice Cooker (And What I’m Cooking First)” For almost five (5) years, a rice cooker has been on my Christmas wish list. Not sure why, but nobody wanted to gift me one. Every year, I received some other gift that I had asked for, or gift cards, which I always used to buy groceries. But never a rice cooker. One of my kids bought a rice cooker for his apartment, but broke it. (Long story. Broke the waffle maker too!) Another one of my kids bought a rice cooker, but it's too small. I'm trying to feed a group of 6 to 8 people. So I needed a bigger pot.

FINALLY!! I decided to buy a rice cooker for myself. It's my birthday/anniversary/mother's day/holiday… whatever reason I could think of gift. LOL.😄

I am very pleased with MYAroma Housewares 32-Cup (Cooked) (16-Cup UNCOOKED) Pot Style Rice Cooker (ARC-7216NG) , White. It's bigger than I thought it would be, and I don't just want to cook rice. As soon as I watched a cooking video and the person cooked a pot of chicken stewI'm on a hunt for rice cooker recipes. DID YOU KNOW you can cook hard-boiled eggs in a rice cooker? Just add water and let the steam do the work. Some say you can make cheesecake in a rice cooker. But I haven't tried that yet.

If you visit my blog, then you know I love sharing links to recipes found on the web. Keep scrolling and you'll find the rice cooker links at the end of this post. IF you're just cooking rice, here are a few ideas on how to turn your rice cooker into a flavor powerhouse. You can infuse flavor into your rice while it cooks.

Savory Infusions

  • Broth instead of water: Use chicken, beef, or vegetable broth for a richer base.

  • Bouillon cubes or granules: Dissolve in the cooking liquid for a punch of umami.

  • Garlic butter: Sauté garlic in butter, then add rice and broth—this combo is heavenly.

  • Herbs & spices: Toss in bay leaves, thyme, rosemary, or cumin seeds while cooking.

Tropical & Sweet Twists

  • Coconut milk: Swap part of the water for coconut milk for creamy, island-style rice.

  • Fruit juices: Pineapple or orange juice adds a sweet tang—great with Caribbean dishes.

  • Cinnamon & cloves: Perfect for sweet rice or as a base for Moroccan-style meals.  (Also add in raisins or dried dates.)

Fresh & Zesty Additions

  • Citrus zest: Lemon or lime zest brightens up the flavor.

  • Fresh herbs: Add cilantro, parsley, or basil right before serving for a pop of green.

  • Infused oils: Drizzle with chili oil, sesame oil, or garlic oil after cooking.

I'm going to take aim at pesto for my Foodie Friday topic.  Another wonderful delight for enlivening salads, adorning sandwiches, dressing pasta … you name it! Always sing the praises of salsa. This time, doing a song and dance routine for pesto.

Hear the word pesto and one usually always thinks Italian. Right? But different cultures have their own version of pesto. Africa. Mexico. Australia. This link is an awesome foodie find! Not only does it tell you the main ingredients in everybody's version but it introduced me to a new word. “Permaculture”.

Foodie Friday : Experience the Joy of Salsa

There was once a time when the recipe for fresh salsa was simply diced tomatoes, onions, green bell peppers, lime juice, red pepper or a jalapeno pepper, salt to taste (cilantro, optional). I love salsa!  It's a great way to eat your veggies.  Several years back, I moved into a new neighborhood and was at the local grocery store. Walked down an aisle, and on the shelves were bottles of every kind of salsa imaginable.

This week's Foodie Friday focus is on salsa!

* * *

Some of them were made with sweet fruits like mangoes and peaches! Oh the wonder of it all! Had no idea salsa came in that many flavors. Gave me all kinds of foodie ideas. Sharing some recipes.

Why keep all these delicious delights to myself?

Foodie Nuggets: Why I Like Black Food

Black jobs might be a figment of former President Trump’s imagination but black food is real! It is both delicious and nutritious.

I never liked black food. Unless it’s ice cream. Just kidding.

When I used to think of black food I thought people were saying that the food was burnt. But that’s not so. I discovered that there is black ice cream, there are black vegetables, and people intentionally add certain ingredients, like charcoal or squid ink, to make the food black.

Doing research I discovered that in London, they have a Black Food Festival. But don’t be confused. The food isn’t the color “black”. It’s called Black Eats Fest and it celebrates food from Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond. It’s a celebration of culinary diversity.

This content is about food that is the color “black”. It’s a brief introduction by way of sharing fun facts, which are the reasons why I like black food.

(1) Black foods are not just a novelty; they have great nutritional value. So when people tell you “eat the rainbow”, be sure to add black veggies to your diet. Learn more: Exotic Vegetables: Do You Include Black Veggies When You Eat the Rainbow?

(2) At one time, in ancient China, there was black rice (some say dark purple), which was also known as “forbidden rice”. It wasn’t forbidden to everyone. The emperors could have some and of course, the wealthy. But these days, it’s available to the masses and even shows up in U.S. restaurants. Black rice is the “perfect choice for vegetarians and vegans looking for additional protein”. Learn more: What Is Forbidden Rice? | Eating Well

(3) Black sesame seeds are not the lighter sesame seeds that are colored black. The black color comes from anthocyanins, which are a type of flavonoid with antioxidant properties. Plus, they are a great source of calcium and magnesium. Learn more: What is Black Sesame, Actually? | Sporked

Autumn is here! Is a Season Your Reason to Drink Tea?

My coffee addiction often keeps me from drinking and enjoying a cup of tea. But other members of my household love to brew! They are not tea experts (yet!) and are always experimenting with different flavors – from caramel apple to licorice to green tea to black tea to … on and on and on.

Photo by Gabi Miranda on Unsplash

I found an interesting blog post written by Ryan Frey who works as a GO TO tech guy for ShareASale, Inc., an established affiliate marketing network corporation. He not only knows his tech stuff but his office co-workers also think of him as a tea aficionado. He must be. Why else would he suggest drinking tea according to the seasons of the year?  In his post, How To Brew Different Tea Varieties for Fall, he recommended five (5) tips for how to enjoy your tea during the autumn season. All excellent advice.  A quick summary of the tips is below.

  • 1. Rooibos or “red tea” ... makes a great neutral base for both sweet and nutty flavors. During the Fall, expect to see flavor blends like chestnut, pumpkin, and chai.
  • 2. Black tea is a totally oxidized (but not “fermented” like Pu’erh tea) version of your everyday tea leaves ... like Earl Grey and English Breakfast.
  • 3. Green and white teas are more delicate, partially or unoxidized tea leaves and buds. ... often fruity, sweet, and complex.
  • 4. Herbal teas or “tisanes” are like rooibos, in that they aren’t from the tea plant at all. They contain alternatives like spices, herbs, flowers, and fruit.
  • 5. Try other brewed beverages like Pu’erh tea and Mate.

What Should Kids Drink? Healthy Beverage Choices for Children

When it comes to growing children, it's extremely important to choose drinks that support their health and development. Based on my research (and life experience), here's a list of the best drinks for children, in order of what's generally considered the best.

Water: The top choice for hydration, it has no calories, sugar, or additives.  My mom and dad used to call water “Adam's ale” and they always made sure to keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator.  I also drank water from the kitchen faucet ... without a filter!  Can you believe it?

Plain Milk: Provides essential nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and protein.
My mom always kept milk in the fridge because we ate a lot of cereal. Although? The amount of sugar in those boxes of cereal? I'm not sure. IT might have canceled out the benefits of the milk.

100% Fruit Juice: Limited amounts can be beneficial, but it's best to avoid juices with added sugars.  The only
juice I remember drinking a lot growing up was orange juice. Back in the day, we had a milkman who delivered, and either that was the only juice he sold, or the only juice my mom bought. I really loved pineapple juice so whenever I got to enjoy it (usually around the holidays), it was a special treat. These days it seems like everybody is into “juicing” and blending fruits and veggies into a drink; or you can buy from the store. There are lots of fruit juices with carrots or beets. That's cool! But I prefer my fruit juice separately.

100% Vegetable Juice: Similar to fruit juice, but with added vitamins and minerals.
It used to be there was only V8 tomato juice and I tried my best to avoid it. LOL. Now V8 has a lot of variety in their vegetable juice product line. Of course, you can buy a juicer and make your own. Green drinks are very popular. I'm guessing that kids will drink it.

Plant-Based Milk Alternatives: Suitable for children with allergies or dietary restrictions, but ensure they are fortified with necessary nutrients.
Some kids are lactose-intolerant. In my home, I gave birth to lactose-intolerant children. They got it from their daddy! My late husband said when he was growing up they gave him goat milk or soy milk. If it weren't for him and having his children, I might have never known there was such a thing as Plant-Based Milk.

Flavored Milk: Can be an occasional treat, but it's better to stick with plain milk for daily consumption.  Occasional? Not for me! My mom kept milk in the fridge but he also kept Nestlé Quik powder in the pantry. If I had to drink milk in a glass it was going to be chocolate! For our school lunches, we had a choice: white or chocolate. I always picked chocolate! I thought those were the only two choices in the world. But there are strawberry, banana, and other flavors.

The point to be made is coffee, tea, sodas or carbonated beverages and fake fruit drinks that have dyes for color and a small percentage of real juice are probably not the “best drinks” for a growing child.  (Although we did drink a lot of Kool-aid.)  But let's see what a medical professional says about it.

What's Your Favorite Jelly, Jam, Preserves or Fruit Spread?

Do you have a favorite fruit topping for your toast? In the house that I grew up, there were only two choices: Welch's grape jelly or Smucker's strawberry preserves. That's what my mom bought. Since she was in charge of grocery shopping, that's what we ate!

So for most of my young life, it never occurred to me to eat something different. Until … one day, my mom brought home grape jam instead of grape jelly. It was still the brand name Welch's but it was jam instead of jelly. I don't know why! Maybe there was no more jelly on the store shelf. It was a mystery. But whatever the reason … we all went “WOW! It was amazing!” We kids made an incredible discovery. Jam spreads much smoother than jelly! It tastes just as good with peanut butter. Why didn't mom always buy this?

Well! All of the siblings, my sister, my brothers and me, decided to unite and requested that mom buy jam henceforth and forevermore! She complied. My mom was easy! (Sometimes.)

Fast forward to my life as a young adult. Got a job working for the federal government and was sent on an official assignment to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Usually, I ate breakfast in the hotel before leaving for work. I ordered a typical American breakfast: bacon, eggs, and toast. At this particular hotel, they had a basket of assorted jellies and jams on the table. Included in the assortment was pineapple preserves.

My life was changed forever!

Those pineapple preserves made the toast tastes like I was having a tropical party in my mouth! It got so that I looked forward to having breakfast every morning!

So now, if anybody asks what's my favorite jelly, jam, preserves or fruit spread?

Pineapple Preserves. What else?!
